How to calculate fuel cost
Enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel economy and the price of fuel. The calculator works out how much fuel you'll burn and what it costs — tick round trip to double the distance, and set how many people are sharing to split it.
How is mpg or L/100km used?
In US mode, fuel used = distance ÷ mpg (gallons). In metric mode, fuel used = distance ÷ 100 × L/100km (litres). Cost is then fuel used × price.
Does it work for electric cars?
Use the same idea: put your efficiency (e.g. miles per kWh as "economy") and price per kWh as the "fuel price" — the cost maths is identical.
How do I work out the gas cost of a road trip?
Enter the trip distance, your car's mpg (or L/100km) and the fuel price; the calculator multiplies the fuel used by the price. Tick round trip to double the distance, and split it between passengers.
